Running DBT Skills-Development Groups.
Teaching the Life Skills at the heart of DBT™ is a 3-day course from the Association for Psychological Therapies (APT), a leading provider of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) training courses in the UK and Ireland, for professionals working in mental health and related areas.
It is the only DBT training that is APT-accredited and also gives you access to APT’s relevant downloadable resources for use post-course. The course is available for teams and individuals and can be attended face-to-face or online. It can also be completed as part of the Extended Training in DBT course.
Executive Summary:
This course lasts 3 days and is all about teaching delegates how to run skills development groups. These are an important part of becoming proficient in DBT, the rationale being that patients need not only to be motivated, gain insights and knowledge etc, but usually also need to acquire skills in:
- Mindfulness
- Interpersonal Effectiveness
- Emotion Regulation
- Distress tolerance.
This course is therefore all about coaching and practice. Every delegate will be expected to run such a group at least once (possibly jointly with another delegate), and will receive constructive feedback on their performance, and time to re-practice. The aim is to return every delegate to their workplace proficient in running DBT Skills Training Groups.
Learning objectives:
- Understand the Importance of Skills Development Groups:
Recognise the significance of skills development groups as an integral part of DBT therapy. - Identify Core DBT Skills:
Define and explain the core DBT skills: Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotion Regulation, and Distress Tolerance. - Apply Coaching Techniques:
Develop the ability to effectively coach individuals in acquiring and practicing DBT skills. - Demonstrate Group Facilitation Skills:
Acquire the necessary skills to facilitate DBT skills development groups, including group dynamics and engagement strategies. - Practice Running DBT Skills Groups:
Conduct DBT skills development groups independently and, if necessary, jointly with another delegate. - Provide Constructive Feedback:
Offer constructive feedback to peers regarding their performance in running DBT skills groups. - Receive and Implement Feedback:
Accept and apply feedback received from peers and instructors to improve group facilitation skills. - Reflect on Personal Growth:
Reflect on personal growth and development as a skills group facilitator and coach. - Proficiency in Running DBT Skills Training Groups:
Achieve a level of proficiency in running DBT Skills Training Groups that enables successful implementation in the workplace. - Enhance Patient Outcomes:
Recognize how proficient skills group facilitation contributes to improved patient outcomes in DBT therapy.
What you receive as a result of attending APT's DBT training:
All delegates are registered at APT as having attended the course, and receive a certificate to acknowledge their attendance, registration, and APT-Accreditation at the appropriate level. As a bona fide APT event, this course automatically has accreditation from The Association for Psychological Therapies. This accreditation is given weight by the fact of over 150,000 professionals having attended APT training.
Upon completion of the 3-day course, delegates will receive the relevant level of APT's Accreditation in DBT.
