Repairing the Damage

Adverse Childhood Experiences: Repairing the Damage™

A 3-day course.

For whole teams working with young people who have been through experiences which are by any standards 'damaging'.

Some children - and adults - who have been through difficult or traumatic experiences are referred to as 'damaged'. It's an unpleasant word but can, unfortunately, be an apt one. The damage can take various forms but usually results in changes in the deepest parts of the brain, resulting in effects which are behavioral, cognitive, biological, social and emotional. Examples include: aggressive behaviour, withdrawal, poor self esteem, hostility to others, lack of interest in activities, disturbed sleep and appetite, sadness, anxiety or anger problems, and poor relationships. Although this is a disturbing list there are many children who exhibit most or all of these as a complete 'package' of apparently self-perpetuating – and worsening - problems, resistant to repeated intervention and thereby the cause of great frustration to professionals. The aim of this course is to repair the damage and so avoid those consequences.

Working with Extremely Traumatised Young People

Working with Extremely Traumatised Young People.

A 10-day course (five 2-day modules).

The impact of childhood traumas can damage physical and mental health, behaviour, and openness to accepting help from others.

This 5-course, 10 day APT-diploma covers the components necessary for professionals and carers to understand this phenomenon, and to interact and intervene effectively. It does so by integrating five 2-day courses to cover the key spectrum from risk assessment and management, right through to understanding the effect of unprocessed trauma and effective ways of processing it. You can alternatively commission just one, two, or more of the 2-day components if you wish.

The Assessment and Risk Assessment of Children and Adolescents in Crisis

The Assessment and Risk Assessment of Children & Adolescents in Crisis™

A 3-day course. (2-day version also available.)

Using existing clinical skills and Davies's structured interview.

Assessing adolescents and children in crisis settings often causes professionals a lot of concern. They wonder whether they have the necessary skills, they are concerned about the potential volatility of the situation, they are unfamiliar with having another adult (the parent) present and concerned, they are not sure about consent and confidentiality issues, and they are not completely sure what their role is: assessment, risk-assessment, management, or what?

Debriefing Survivors of Major Incidents

Debriefing Survivors of Major Incidents.

A 3-day course. (2-day version also available.)

It is difficult to know what to do after a major incident, but 'nothing' is rarely the best option.

Major incidents such as patient-suicide, assaults, severe self harm, hostage takings etc can be very stressful for the staff concerned. Through lecture, case study and role play, this course examines how best to respond to such situations to minimise the stress; when it's best to say little or nothing, when to get a group of staff together, what to say, what procedures to follow, etc. It provides very clear guidelines in an often confused and difficult area.

CBT for PTSD

CBT for PTSD.

A 3-day course. (2-day version also available.)

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is literally a life changing disorder. It is famously difficult to treat, yet Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can produce impressive results.

Experiencing a life-threatening event can leave the person with effects including: persistently re-experiencing the event (e.g. intrusive thoughts and images of it), a numbing of general responsiveness (e.g. less interest in significant activities and a feeling of detachment from others), persistent hyperarousal (e.g. difficulty sleeping, irritability, exaggerated startle response) adding up to significant distress or impaired functioning. This course examines effective Cognitive Behavioural Therapy based interventions (a) to ameliorate these effects and (b) to greatly improve the patient's quality of life where some effects cannot be mitigated.

DBT Essentials

DBT Essentials.

A 3-day course.

Instruction in the key components of DBT for those who want to add them to their repertoire without necessarily becoming 'a DBT therapist', and for those thinking of taking the first step in becoming a specialised DBT therapist.

As well as covering the 'overall concept of DBT', it covers its 'essential elements', namely the concepts of: Validation; Metaphor; Relentless Problem Solving; and Contingency Management, and the skills of: Mindfulness; Distress Tolerance; Interpersonal Effectiveness; and Emotional Regulation.

Mindfulness: Level 1

Teaching Mindfulness in Clinical Practice, Level 1.

A 2-day course.

Mindfulness is a psychological intervention that we dream of: it works both for clients/patients and us, and its effectiveness is demonstrated not just by clinical studies but by the unusual number of people testifying to its benefit. Moreover it is a quick, simple concept with obvious validity and relevance. It fits with the thinking of those who maintain that "To live effectively and well cannot be a complicated thing, so any intervention to help people do so should not itself be complicated”.
