Preventing PTSD after major events, at work and elsewhere.

'Preventing PTSD after major events, at work and elsewhere' is a 3-day course from the Association for Psychological Therapies (APT), a leading provider of training for professionals working in mental health and related areas in the UK and Ireland.

It is the only PTSD training that is APT-accredited and also gives you access to APT’s relevant downloadable resources for use post-course. The course is available for teams/organisations and can be attended face-to-face or online. (2-day version also available.)

Executive Summary:

The focus of this course is to provide an overall plan for post-incident management – to prevent major long-term effects ‘taking hold’. It is possible that the 'therapy' you do shortly following an incident may be helpful for ever.

The course is intended mainly for where a major incident has occurred at work, e.g. assaults and suicides, although the measures described will also apply to major incidents elsewhere e.g. a factory explosion and such cases are also mentioned. It is much more about preventing PTSD than treating it (see Trauma-Focused CBT, for all ages for that). A focus on preventing PTSD is important area for many reasons and yet it is one where there are few established guidelines so we are particularly pleased to have built a relevant and well received input to address it.

Who should attend:

People who attend this course normally fall into one of two categories:

1. Professionals who see patients in 1:1 treatment settings and have a significant degree of clinical skill.

2. 'Whole teams' (either in inpatient or community settings) seeking to have a common approach.

The course covers:

  • Developing an awareness of what incidents are likely to affect your colleagues.
  • The nature and benefit of ‘real support’ deep from the evolutionarily primitive brain.
  • Providing support in the format that suits best: one to one or group? Formal or informal?
  • Make sure the person(s) are safe and secure.
  • The nature of ‘endemic incidents’ - incidents which are likely to repeat regularly.
  • How to assess, without further traumatising the person.
  • How to develop empathy for something you may not have experienced.
  • Nurturing or restoring your colleagues feelings of competence.
  • The three types of social support, and which one is best.
  • ‘Case Formulation’ – making sense of what has happened and so what you can best do to help.
  • How to remind the person of the tools they already have, and how encourage, refine and develop their use.
  • How Mindfulness is usually helpful after major incidents.
  • Techniques to help them to regulate their emotions – to bring them under control.
  • Techniques to help them to tolerate the inevitable distress.
  • How to help them to resolve problems that have now appeared, as they usually do after a major incident.
  • One to One or Groupwork? Why you maybe shouldn’t rush to work in a group, and where are the pot-hoes if you choose to do so.
  • How to find out what meaning they have taken from the trauma – and how to shape it into a more helpful meaning.
  • Tidying up any mis-perceptions, to create a kinder account of what happened.
  • Being compassionate even when the incident may have been partly the responsibility of the professional. And how to help them be so too.
  • Helping them to develop a bearable account of what happened – or even a positive one.
  • How to help them get used to certain triggering situations and activities again.
  • The importance of actively looking after yourself, formally and informally.

What this course will do for you:

  • You will have clarified your thinking: you will know the importance of preventing the development of PTSD if possible.
  • You will have a repertoire of skills with which to intervene to help people post-incident.
  • You will have the chance to practise skills and planning in a safe environment.

What you receive as a result of attending the training:

You will be registered as having attended the course, thereby gaining APT's Level 1 accreditation, and receive a certificate to this effect. The accreditation gives you access to online resources associated with the course and access to the online exam if you wish to uprate your APT accreditation to Level 2.

Your registration lasts indefinitely, whilst your accreditation lasts for 3 years from the date of completion and is renewable.

Your accreditation is given value by the fact of over 150,000 people having attended APT training. See APT accreditation for full details.

Written Feedback

Reviews.

APT prides itself on the feedback we receive about our courses. Below are just some of the great comments the Preventing PTSD after major events, at work and elsewhere course has received.

"The tutor successfully completed the almost unheard of task of providing excellent, informative training to a group of very tricky psychologists! He was interesting, knowledgeable and greatly added to our understanding. He represented APT very, very well and he has increased my likelihood of using APT again.”

The best course I have been on in years. I feel empowered to make a change.”
