Motivational Interviewing (MI) is one of the most widely used, evidence-based approaches for helping people resolve ambivalence and make positive changes in their lives. This one-day Motivational Interviewing training from the Association for Psychological Therapies (APT) gives you the essential knowledge and skills to start using MI effectively in your practice.
The course is APT-accredited, provides access to downloadable post-course resources, and is available live for both teams and individuals, either face-to-face or online.
Executive Summary:
Motivational Interviewing is an organised, respectful way of helping people to:
- Recognise their problems.
- Weigh up their ambivalence.
- Find the motivation to change.
- Develop realistic plans for action.

This introductory MI course covers the four broad components of skill:
- Knowledge and Spirit.
- Engaging, Focusing, and Evoking.
- Planning and Integration.
- The link with Stages of Change (Prochaska, DiClemente et al).

- Generating change talk and responding in ways that strengthen it.
- Avoiding traps in the early stages of therapy.
- Responding to sustain talk without reinforcing it.
- Timing, and negotiating a plan for change.
- The link between Miller and Rollnick’s MI and the Stages of Change model (Prochaska et al).
- Developing your MI skills and practice beyond the course.
