Mental Health Awareness for Schools

Mental Health Awareness for those working with Children and Young People.

Mental Health Awareness for those working with Children and Young People is from APT, a UK leading provider of training in mental health and related areas. Two complementary 1-day courses. You can attend either or both.

Available ‘onsite’ (we come to you for a fixed, all-inclusive fee to train a group of 6-15 people). For flexible arrangements, perhaps for schools linking together or for joined-up multidisciplinary training, please contact the office who would be happy to discuss your needs.

Executive Summary:

Children’s mental health is a serious area of concern – around 10% of children are now reported to have a diagnosable mental health condition and of these, most report delays in accessing appropriate help.

The course is split into two parts, echoing the World Health Organisation’s definition of health as ‘complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’.

Day One is about setting up your school or service so that it naturally generates good mental health and wellbeing. Day Two is to help you spot people who are having problems and signpost your best course of action. You can attend either or both days.

Who should attend?

As well as those intending to become ‘mental health leads’, this course is suitable for all teachers, learning support staff, head teachers and SENCOs (whom it will equip ahead of the proposed compulsory curriculum changes relating to children’s mental health), and school staff.

The course is suitable for professionals working with children and young people or having regular contact with families, including school nurses, health visitors and social workers.

The course covers a great deal:

Day 1: Generating wellness – how to build and support the mental health of everybody.

This day will be very ‘hands-on’ presenting you with the principles and inviting you to show how you can apply those principles in your own area to create a plan you can take back and use.

Part 2: Responding to illness, issues, and problems – what you need to know and what you can do.

What do you get from attending this course, across the two days?

What you receive as a result of attending this training:

You will be registered as having attended the course, thereby gaining APT's Level 1 accreditation, and receive a certificate to this effect. The accreditation gives you access to online resources associated with the course.

Your registration lasts indefinitely, and your accreditation lasts for 3 years and is renewable by sitting an online refresher which also upgrades your accreditation to APT Level 2 if you are successful in the associated online exam.

Your accreditation is given value by the fact of over 100,000 people having attended APT training. See APT accreditation for full details.

Booking this training is easy.

Option 2: 'Train the Trainer':

If you or a colleague are a senior professional (e.g. consultant psychologist) and have a talent for communication and teaching, then you are welcome to apply to become an APT-accredited tutor. You could then tutor the course - or your chosen modules from it - in your own organisation, under license.

This is not only a highly appropriate use of senior professionals, but it also saves your organisation the tutor-component of the fee (around 50%) each time you run it or your chosen modules.
