Course Content:

Module 1: Risk Assessment and Risk Management: Principles, Problems and Effective Practice.

Risk Assessment: A Professional Responsibility


Why it is essential to be able to make a Risk Assessment. The legal and professional
issues that underlie it. Legal precedents and what they imply. The difficulty of accurately predicting rare events; the ethical problems posed by ‘false positives’ – and what to do
about it.

Managing Risk, so you can work safely with risky clients.

This section covers ‘best practice’ in risk management, how to work with the maximum professional and personal safety with high-risk clients. We examine the ‘management’ section of the DICES system and delegates get the chance to apply the guide to their
own clients.

Module 2: A Risk to Oneself: Suicide, Self-harm Self-neglect, Vulnerability to Exploitation.


Predicting who is at risk of Suicide. The use of DICES-S

Predicting who is at risk of Self-Neglect, or Vulnerable to exploitation by others.
The use of DICES-SN&V.

Managing the risk: keeping everyone safe, including you.

Module 3: A Risk to Others: Violence and Sexual Assault.


Predicting who may be violent to others. Including the use of DICES-V.

Predicting the risk of a physical assault on you, the professional, in a way that immediately enables you to minimise that risk.

People who may commit Sexual Assaults. Including DICES-SA.

Managing the risk: keeping everyone safe, including you.

Module 4: (Interspersed throughout) Applying DICES to your own situation.

Includes use of Substance-DICE, C&A-DICE and Older-DICE where appropriate.
