Background:
Suicide is one of the major mental health problems in the UK, being one of the most major
causes of death in 18-35 year old males, as well as older adults.
In terms of causing ‘lost years of life’ it outranks virtually every physical disease in the UK.
It is something that frightens many therapists who may only think to ‘have the person admitted’. This often simply delays the problem: within one month of discharge is a key time for suicide.
If the patient is already admitted, the problem is obvious.
.......................................................................................................................................................................
In 3 days you will cover a great deal:
• The 3 aims when seeing any patient for the first time.
• The 3 additional goals when seeing someone who is a significant suicide risk.
• Recognising the risk of suicide: the two classes of risk factors. DICES-S: a checklist to help
assess suicide risk.
• Risk management: managing the risk to give the best possible help to the person, and also
to keep you safe.
• Helping the person see what support is available for them, and helping them access it.
The 3 types of social support.
• The therapeutic relationship: how to manage it to minimise the risks inherent in it and
maximise the benefits.
• The concept of ‘mood’ and the dangers in its fluctuation. 4 factors to stabilise mood.
• The key role played by interpersonal factors – relationships with others; what they are and
how to explore them with the person.
• Balancing the past, the present, and the future. Working on ‘hopelessness’ – a crucial
concept in suicide – by developing a future focus.
• Graded diary keeping; how it works. How to read a suicidal person’s diary.
• Scheduling, de-scheduling and setting rewarding and achievable goals.
• The role of letter-writing (from you to the patient).
• How to measure progress and why it is essential.
• The high risk associated with suicidal rumination, and how to counter it.
• Drug therapies for depression and how they relate to our interventions.
• What to do when a patient suddenly feels suicidal again, after several sessions with us.
• If the worst happens: dealing with ‘Post-incident effects’ on us or our colleagues.
.......................................................................................................................................................................
What you will gain from this course:
• You will be able to assess the risk of suicide and know what to do immediately for best long term outcome.
• You will be able to keep yourself professionally safe, while doing the absolute best for the patient.
• You will know the importance of your relationship with the patient … and when you may not
be the best person to help.
• You will know how to help stabilise the person’s fluctuations in mood.
• You will be able to see support the patient has available, and help them access it.
• You will understand about ‘hopelessness’ and how to reduce it.
• You will know how to use the major long-term mood-raising interventions.
• You will know why monitoring progress is important, and have a form that helps do it.
• What to do when a patient suddenly feels suicidal again, after several sessions with us.
• You will know what to do if the worst happens: how to deal with ‘Post-incident effects’ on
you or your colleagues.

and professional training seminars I’ve been to. The facilitator not only had a
great deal of credibility in the subject,
but an ability to really facilitate learning, questioning and practising. I found the course content particularly relevant to
the area I’m working in, and will be recommending it to my colleagues."
