Background:
The FAR-LEVASH® skills are vital ones for mental health professionals to have.
We know from the work of Miller and Sanchez, for example, that the areas we cover on the
FAR-LEVASH® course are the ones that span a range of therapies. In other words they are essential skills to have if you wish to apply specific therapeutic techniques such as CBT or IPT, but they are likely to be powerfully effective in and of themselves.
If you work in the area of mental health or are responsible for people who do then you and they need to have the skills described on this course in high order.
Less experienced staff will certainly wish to attend this course, but experienced staff skilled in specific therapeutic techniques may well feel it is appropriate to revisit these crucial skills.
.......................................................................................................................................................................
In 3 days you will be covering 4 crucial areas:
1. Forming A Relationship. 'The best single predictor of success or failure in therapy' (Goleman 1985). The 4 Key elements: clarity on the nature of the relationship, understanding the person's situation, appearing to have credibility and authority, and developing a rapport. How to achieve these, and what to do when you can't.
2. Listening Empathically. How to get a person to talk and to keep talking. What to talk about, using active listening and developing a proper, empathic understanding of what is said.
3. Validating and Affirming. How to make the person feel their response to a situation is 'valid' and also to be able to look at whether it is in line with other people's reactions, and whether it is helpful. Actively supporting the person while you do this with them.
4. Setting Homework. The section that links your good clinical skills with 'real life'. What constitutes helpful homework and how to encourage the person to do it. The Stages of Change and how they should guide you in your homework suggestions. Typical homework tasks from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy.

• You will have a chance on the course to practise the key skills and apply them to prepared case studies and think how this would apply to the people you yourself are helping.
• You will know how to use the FAR-LEVASH® acronym to keep you constantly on track when working in a helping relationship.
• You will have a workbook to take away and remind you of the key information.
